What we are building

Every time you ask an AI a question, it uses electricity. That electricity has a carbon cost. Almost nobody tells you what it is.

We wrote a standard for saying it out loud. It is called AiEDs, the AI Energy Disclosure Standard. It estimates the energy and carbon of each AI response and records it where a person can review it later, the same way you would log cost or latency. The numbers are estimates built from published figures, not meter readings of actual hardware, and we say so plainly everywhere we show them.

We also build apps that report on the state of the planet from real measurements: ocean chemistry, forest cover, wildfires, protected land. When a reading is not available, we say so instead of showing a plausible number. Absence is honest. A made-up number is not.

Why this belongs in a nonprofit

A disclosure standard owned by a company is a marketing asset. A disclosure standard owned by a nonprofit is infrastructure.

If AiEDs is going to be useful to anyone besides us, it cannot depend on our company staying in business, or on us staying honest. Putting it somewhere it can outlive us is the point.

What the 501(c)(3) would do

Three things.

1. Maintain AiEDs and K13 as open published standards, free to use and free to audit by anyone, including people who disagree with us.
2. Fund independent measurement of AI energy use. Most figures available today come from the companies being measured.
3. Direct contributions toward restoration work that offsets measured impact, and publish what was funded and what it cost.

Where we actually are

Random Knights, LLC is a Georgia limited liability company. We intend to apply for 501(c)(3) status. We have not applied yet, and nothing has been granted.

Donations are not tax-deductible at this time. They go to a company, not a charity. We would rather say that plainly than take your money under an impression we have not earned.
